Fedor Emelianenko
As the blood dripped copiously from the cut on his right eyebrow, Fedor “The Russian Experiment†Emelianenko was lifted into the air and delivered an impressive reverse takedown on Matt “The Law†Lindland, his opponent for BodogFight’s “Clash of the Nations†in St. Petersburg, Russia on April 14th, 2007. Within 2 minutes of slamming Lindland to the canvas, Emelianenko dominated with an armbar and was tapped out at 2:38 of round one, giving the Russian phenomenon and international celebrity another notch on his PRIDE World Heavyweight Championship Belt. Emelianenko has held his PRIDE title since March 16th, 2003 when he beat out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a unanimous decision and he shows no signs of giving up the gold in the near future.
Fedor Emelianenko (26-1), 30 years old, 6’0â€, 233lb. Russian heavyweight MMA fighter is PRIDE’s superstar champion. He reigns in the heavyweight class with his strong Sambo and Judo style, controlling his opponents with his takedowns and ground skills. He is feared to be the strongest pound for pound fighter of all time. Additionally, his adeptness at maneuvering and thrashing punches from submission position proves Emelianenko’s theory that “It’s possible to win even lying on your back”, as he said in “Rossiyaâ€, a National Russian newspaper.
Emelianenko’s crushing striking power and meticulous game planning has earned him his reputation as a master in the world of mixed martial arts. Fedor began his career with the MMA in 2000, because he “didn’t have any moneyâ€. He has been a student of Sambo and Judo since the age of 10 under his trainer Vladimir Mihailovich Voronov who has said, as a youth, Fedor was not the best fighter in the bunch but showed extreme dedication. That dedication carried him through the Russian Army all the way to official certification as a “Master of Sports†in Sambo and Judo in 1997 and a bronze medal in the 1998 Russian Judo Championships. In 1999, he began training in boxing, kick-boxing, grappling and strength training with daily push ups, crunches and pull-ups, often in a high-altitude Russian setting.
