Forrest definately didn’t take a dive. Silva is just way too fast and you’re very vulnerable to chin hits that early in a fight. Forrest needs a couple of punches to get going and he needs to land a few of his own as well. Not being able to hit your foe must be very frustrating.

Sonahawk and GoodPunch are right. I’ve been caught on the button in a crowd fight. The heart you see Forest and others display are generally when taking hooks to the head. Totally different than getting caught right on the button by a fast, well-placed piston-like punch by the exceptional fighter that Silva is. It literally turns you ‘off’ like a light. Heart, heck yeah. It took a hell of a lotta heart to come to quickly enough to hold your hands up and be aware you were just clicked off like that. Nothing you can do about a punch like that. Ask Rashad Evans after Machida, Liddell after Jackson’s hook, and countless others. Forest had no business standing with Silva.

Sorry, but some of you guys know nothing about striking. The punches in “the best fight in ufc history” are the one’s that had nothing on it…sure the fight was very important, but not because it showcased crisp clean strikes, it was because of the exposure it got.
First, Silva already had him hurt from the first knockdowns. Second, Silva helping him up is all part of the mind games he plays with his opponent (says you can’t get up but i got enough energy to spare to help you up; I am better than you)…just like when he covered forests hands, making him apologize for an eye poke (he didn’t give him daps he covered his hands; remember I am better than you)…just like when he rocked Forest and waived him in, he was looking for Forest reaction, when Forest shrugged his shoulders (apologizing) Silva knew where Forest’s mind was at…Forest now knows Silva is in fact better than him.
Third, I saw at least 2 camera angles on that punch, not 1.
Fourth, it wasn’t setup, it just so happens that when Forest gets frustrated he tends to go straight at you. Combine that with his rudimentary (in comparison to Silva) striking; and you get the classic Forest Right straight, step, left straight, step, right straight, circle…that’s an easy setup for a counter punch. That’s what Silva did, countered…which brings me to my next point.
Fifth, a counter has the power of the shot thrown from both fighters. The punch power starts from the ground and ends with what the person connects with, usually a fist, in Forest’s case – his chin. If you look at the other camera angle you will see his foot is planted just as his counter strike landed (so he had a base, he was not pushing off his back foot, not a jab in my mind, more of a backing up superman without raising a knee first), Silva’s hands provided the speed, Silva’s body followed the 2nd straight as it returned to Forest, providing a good bit of power, and Griffin’s 3rd straight sent it’s own power back into griffins chin. It’s not a question of the strength of the counter, it’s a question of its timing.
If your running and you hit a wall does it not hurt? How hard did the wall hit you? Trick question the wall didn’t hit you, you hit the wall. So now I ask you how hard did Anderson hit him? Not that hard (compared to what Silva landed earlier in the fight), Forest just ran into a wall.
Sixth, Forest could problem have taken more shots, I don’t think that was the problem, he was mentally beaten, demoralized. That’s what Silva does he make you know that he’s better than you and when you start doubting your strikes, he shows you how much better than you he is…It’s the Aura that beats you not the man. That’s why everyone sees him as cocky, you can’t make your opponents know your better than them if you don’t act like it…He’s confident…believe in your strikes or you will hesitate, if you hesitate you will never connect.
Sorry for the rant. I don’t fight but I train hard; It pisses me off when people call a fight fixed when it clearly wasn’t (kimbo on the other hand).
Forest is a great fighter, I like him a lot…he has filled a lot of the holes in his game. I’ve seen him look great off his back, defending very well, then I’ve seen leave himself wide open when the opponent is in his guard too, not the most consistent fighter but he always comes to fight. Hope he comes back stronger, His lose to Jardine made him into a better fighter…hopefully this will drive him to the next level. Honestly though Forest has the tools to clean out more than half his division. With that said There is no shame in losing to Anderson Silva; Machida and him are on another level. Replacing power; with speed, timing, distance and technique.

BTW i believe Forest punches were slow because he was trying a feeling out process likes Silva likes to. If you react normally during the feeling out process it’s like telling you opponent when you do that (thing that you faked), i’m gonna do this. So I believe Forest wasn’t trying to feed any of that information to him…but before Forest knew the feeling out process was done he was already being hit. Besides that I think Forest was trying to conserve energy, so he could take down Silva in the later round, just didn’t get that far.

Griffin trained it looks to me as though he may have thought Silva to be a joke and well there you have it. A serious UFC fighter will study the fighters previous fights so he can have an idea of the fighters stance,stamina, position, way the other fighter throws punches, pretty much the whole profile. Good fight overall. Very happy Silva won.
